The 140W solar setup I have charges at 7A (they never produce the rated power). I once measured the refrigerator load at 11A. If it is below 13V you are not charging the battery. If you want to do an experiment, try starting the truck up, turn on the refrigerator, and then measure the voltage of the camper. The problem is the refrigerator is very inefficient compared to a compressor driven type and it will use a lot of current, faster than it can be charged by your truck alternator. How important is it to add standalone battery monitoring? Will a decent solar controller provide enough information on the battery system without adding something like a Victron?Ĭan we run the fridge on DC power with the dealer installed battery while driving (assuming the truck is providing power to the camper battery)? I'm guessing this won't be viable until we have more DC capacity and solar.ĭon't ever run your 3-way fridge on DC. How much capacity should we add? Would adding 2 Group 31 batteries to the existing Group 24 likely provide enough capacity with 200 watts of solar? Can we add additional AGM or lithium batteries with one lead acid? Should we keep the existing battery? It's brand new but I'm not sure if it limits what batteries we can add. What should we start with? It seems like increasing the battery capacity is the biggest priority. We anticipate usually being in pretty warm sunny areas so we'll hopefully have decent solar during the day. Led lights, charging electronics, and a fridge. Add an additional 2-4 batteries.Īdd a volt meter to monitor battery bank health.īe able to boondock for 7-10 days with pretty light energy use.
#Mighty bruin battery upgrade
Upgrade battery bank with external battery box. Solar - Pre wired for solar, but currently lacking panels, controller, and maybe a fuse. I think this is a group 24 with ~80 amp hours. Would appreciate any advice or suggestions on the below questions!ĭealer installed battery - 12V Mighty Bruin deep cycle 24t85. We just set off on our first trip with a pop up slide in camper and we have so many questions about how the battery works and the best way to upgrade the system.
